Tourism, arts could be Ghana's economic pillars – Presidential aspirant An independent presidential aspirant, Marricke Kofi Gane, has said that with the right investment, tourism and arts could be the biggest contributors to Ghana’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
Former Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Bernard Allotey Jacobs, is appealing to the government to renovate all forts, castles, and tourist sites in the Central Region.
He wants the Akufo-Addo led the government to rehabilitate all forts and castles in the region to promote tourism in Ghana. The Western Regional Minister, Mr Kwabena Okyere Darko Mensah, has called on investors to take advantage of the tourism potentials in the region.
At this year’s Aviation and Tourism Conference held in Takoradi in the Western Region last Thursday, the minister described the geographical position of the region as “appetising and inviting” enough to goad tourists and potential investors looking for suitable investment destinations. “We, in Ghana, will ensure that the focus of activities commemorating the arrival of the first African slaves in Virginia showcases the achievements, creativity, ingenuity and resilience of the African peoples through the ages’ Africans should never again permit themselves to be subjected to the dehumanising conditions under which slavery was carried out, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said on Monday.
He said Africans ought to strengthen their commitment to ensuring that that blot on the Continent's history did not repeat itself.

Work on Accra-Nsawam rail line has resumed weeks after it was temporarily halted because of activities of encroachers.
The activities of the encroachers, who included sand winners, had compromised the structural integrity of the existing facility, leaving the Ghana Railways Company Limited (GRCL) with no option but to reconstruct new ones. Arrangements have been made to get onboard rail workers from Takoradi to facilitate the reconstruction work which is expected to be completed within three weeks. The Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Catherine Abelema Afeku, has been appointed Chairperson of the Leadership Taskforce of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).
The appointment was announced at the first meeting of the Leadership Taskforce which took place on January 25, 2018 at the headquarters of the world body in Madrid, Spain. The Atiwa Forest, located in the Eastern Region, and among the 260 forest reserves in the country, is one of the largest remaining blocks of tropical forests and one of the healthiest and important ecosystems in West Africa. Environmental organizations renewed their calls on government to stop all mining and prospecting activities in the Atiwa Forest Reserve due to its dire repercussions on the country.
The environmental groups said the Atiwa Forest delivered a variety of ecosystem service and other benefits that superseded whatever financial gains the country may be derived from mining bauxite in the forest. Pictures of what appears to be ‘starving’ lions at the Achimota Forest Zoo have gone viral on social media, prompting members of the public to raise concerns about the welfare of animals in Ghana.
